1. How I met your mother
Number of seasons: 9
Genre: comedy, romance
My boyfriend told me to watch this show. I remember I was in my first year of university when I started watching it. I loved it and I would watch it again and again.
How I met your mother is one giant throwback. Ted Mosby is recounting to his children the story of how he met their mother. On multiple occasions, you think “Oh finally! I get to know who the mother is in this equation,” but just wait and see.
The storyline follows Ted and his best friends in their daily lives and is full of humorous moments. You will watch Ted fall in love and out of love, see him follow his dreams and his disappointments. You will basically fall in love with this show and it will make you want to be part of their group, or have friends just like Ted’s!
You can watch it on Netflix.
2. Friends
Number of seasons: 10
Genre: comedy, romance
Okay, now if you have no idea what ‘Friends’ is you have most certainly been living under a rock, or you are way too young to know about it. ‘Friends’ is one of the classics. It is the TV show you want to watch any time of the day or night if you are happy or sad.
Follow Rachel, Monica, Phoebe, Ross, Chandler and Joey in their daily lives and see what they keep getting themselves into. It is one of the best 90s shows, if not the best one, and I guarantee it will put you in a much better mood. Even my dad loves this show and I bet you will not be able to not dance or sing the intro song.
You can watch it on Netflix. (you have no excuse)
3. Sex and the city
Number of seasons: 6
Genre: comedy, drama, romance
I LOVE IT! Everyone loves Sex and the City, am I right? I have watched it two or three times now, and it is my go-to TV show whenever I want to watch something and I have no idea what.
You are probably familiar with Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda, the four best friends living in New York City. Even the setting is amazing, dreamy NYC.
Fun fact: One of the reasons why I wanted to become a journalist is Carrie Bradshaw. She is a columnist and writes about sex, hence the title, and hers and her best-friends experiences. Light, full of humour, romance and drama, and everything, in one show.
If you haven’t watched it yet do it tonight, you will thank me later.
You can watch the two movies which came out long after the tv show ended, on Netflix or the full 6 seasons on HBOgo.
4. Gossip Girl

“Good morning upper east siders! Gossip Girl here, your one and only source into the scandalous lives of Manhattan’s elite. Who am I? That’s one secret I’ll never tell. You know you love me. xoxo, Gossip Girl”
I have seen this show probably at least 3 times now and I know the opening lines by heart. This TV show is based on a series of books written by Cecily Von Ziegesar and is basically about this elite group of friends: Serena, Blair, Chuck and Nate and the outsider, Dan Humphries and his family.
The plot follows Serena Van der Woodsen, a former party girl, who returns from boarding school to the Upper East Side. Get comfortable in your seat and prepare yourself for some drama and romance. Watch the trailer to get a better sense of the show.
You can watch it on Netflix.
5. The Carrie Diaries

The action takes place in the early 1980s and follows miss Carries Bradshaw through her high school experience. Throughout the two seasons, we learn how Carrie deals with sex and love, and how she manages to balance friendships and family issues.
You should know that this is not a “before” Sex and the City TV show, it is a CW production which aired in 2013. If you like Gossip Girl or any other girly TV shows, give it a watch.
6. Dynasty
Seasons: 1
Genre: drama, romance
Dynasty came out in 2017. It kind of gives me a ‘Gossip Girl’-y vibe. The show is about two wealthy families having a feud. Weddings, funerals, sex scandals and expensive lifestyle: this sums up the show entirely.
You can watch it on Netflix.
7. Gilmore Girls
Number of seasons: 7
Genre: comedy, drama
My two favourite girls. I have started watching it in 2017, probably after I started my second year of studying and I wanted something new to watch. I couldn’t believe I hadn’t seen it ever before. It is the TV-show you could binge-watch or just casually watch with a bowl of popcorn or a hot chocolate on the sofa. I am just finishing season 7 and I try to stall and not watch the couple of episodes I have left because I will miss watching it so much. Anyhow…
The story follows Lorelei Gilmore who got pregnant at 16, and her daughter Rori Gilmore through reconnecting with Lorelei’s parents and Rori’s high school and college adventures. This tv show gives you such a good and cosy vibe and will make you go back in time in the early 2000s.
You can watch it on Netflix.
8. Girlboss
Number of seasons: 1
Genre: comedy
You can watch it on Netflix.
If you are familiar with the clothing brand Nasty Gal and the “Girlboss” book written by the founder of Nasty Gal, Sophia Amoruso, then you will love this TV show. It is “loosely” based on the story of how Sophia created Nasty Gal. It is really funny and captivating. I watched it in two days because I love it that much. Basically, the character Sophia is passionate about fashion, but a disorganised person with issues in coping with responsibilities in life. Follow her from the moment her idea of “Nasty Gal” business comes about until the launch of the now famous and successful website.
9. Famous in love

Paige Townsen is an ordinary girl who has a passion for acting. She auditions for a Hollywood movie and kills it with her talent. She gets the part and it will change her life radically. She is forced to quit college and throughout the show, her friendships are tested. She inevitably starts to develop feelings for her co-lead, Rainer Devon while also having feelings for her best friend, Jake Salt.

Again, this TV show is definitely for you if you like Gossip Girl.
It is based around a Kansas family who relocates to Beverly Hills. They have two children who transfer to West Beverly Hills High where all the drama lies. Basically, this TV show is about a group of friends who find themselves in different situations.
