One of my dreams was to learn how to ski. Romania has beautiful sky-high mountains with hidden treasures like waterfalls and steep cliffs. It is especially mesmerising when it’s winter and everything is covered in a snowy blanket.
So on New Year’s Eve, my boyfriend, his sister, her boyfriend and I decided to escape in the mountains. We booked two rooms and packed our bags. And on the 7th of January, we jumped in the car and made our way to Arieşeni, Romania. I was particularly looking forward to seeing the landscapes and the narrow roads that led to Arieşeni, where you can see the marvels of nature.
The road to Arieşeni
Once we arrived in Arieşeni we changed into our ski suits and I struggled to climb on the slopes.
The first time I tried skiing I was going down the slope with too much speed and I panicked and fell. You should have seen it. In my mind, it looked way more dramatic than it actually was. I thought my hat and sunglasses were all over the place along with my ski gear. But when I got up everything was right next to me.
I got up and climbed up the slope again and tried my best to learn how to ski.
We got lucky and the time we had spent on the slope was accompanied by sunny weather and later we witnessed a vividly pink, with specks of purple, sunset.
Such a lovely sunset Dawn in Arieşeni

I finally found the courage to go up the slope with the ski lift and the first two times I went up I couldn’t stand straight. I somehow finally managed to stand still and I also learnt how to go down the slope without falling, which is a huge accomplishment for me!
My boyfriend, Sebastian, and I have always wanted to have a romantic getaway in the mountains, but the odds were never in our favour and two years and a half later we finally managed to ski together.
I loved every minute of it and I cannot wait to go back next winter.
I am extremely happy and grateful that I got to see snow this year. Many childhood memories came to mind of when I was younger and building snowmen with my sister or getting in innocent snowball fights.
Since I moved to London, one thing I have definitely missed about Romania is the gorgeous weather and the stunning places we have.
If you love skiing and being outdoors, going on a hike or simply relaxing in nature, I definitely suggest that you book a city break in Romania, any place you desire. Seriously, we have everything you need – mountains and the beach, hills and fields.
I believe that people need to discover the beauty Romania has to offer, so what are you waiting for?
